Dear Members of BNS, colleagues and friends,

It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we learned of the passing on November 12 of Professor Ernest Mund, Honorary Research director of FNRS and Emeritus Professor at Université Catholique de Louvain

He was a world-renowned figure in the field of nuclear engineering and rector physics and more particularly in neutron transport theory and numerical modelling. His contributions in nodal methods for solving the Boltzmann transport equation in neutronics are worldwide recognized. He served in many scientific councils of renowned research institution or safety authorities and for us as BNS we remind him acting and evaluating our science and project in the scientific council of SCK CEN (DAV-VSR, WAC) and in the Scientific Council of FANC/AFCN. He directed many theses (master and PhD levels) of so many of us and beyond. His expertise, dedication, and passion for research have left an indelible mark on our scientific community.

Over the past decade, he became passionate about the economic and societal aspects of nuclear energy, aiming to contribute to the factual evaluation of this energy source and to the societal debate on the contribution of nuclear energy to the energy transition in a rational and non-emotional manner.

Professor Mund was not only an exceptional researcher but also an inspiring mentor and a kind-hearted colleague. His scientific legacy will continue to influence and guide future generations.

In these difficult times, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. May the memory of his contributions and generous spirit bring some comfort to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

With our deepest sympathy,

The BNS Executive Committee
